Proudly endorsing John McCain for President

Yeah, so in the wake of yet another painful political loss I'm seriously considering formally endorsing Grumpy McSame for President of the United States. Not that he'd care one bit about my endorsing him of course; and not that I'd ever donate a cent to him; or that I'd ever campaign one minute for him. But still...

See, here's the deal: I'm like the best Democrat ever to pick losers and, as you might be aware, in our party that's no small feat.

Give me an intelligent, thoughtful, well connected politician who has seemingly everything going for her or him, let me throw in my support, and BOOOM! Humiliating disaster will strike with near 100 % certainty.

I've got years of empirical evidence to back it up. For instance I enthusiastically supported Bill Bradley in 2000. That is a particularly good example as Bradley's losing streak was impressive even for a candidate supported by me. So needless to say I soon shifted my invaluable support (invaluable to the opponent that is) to Al Gore. The rest, as they say, is history.

The year 2004 proved at first to be a really odd experience as my candidate actually won the primary. (Yep, I was for Kerry before Iowa.) Fate naturally couldn't stand it. Soon enough the iron rule behind this exception asserted itself in a forceful way as some creative individuals decided to air a low quality TV ad belying Kerry's military career on his swift boat.

Now in 2008 I'm back to normal again; apparently by my sheer enthusiastic support alone delivering ignominious defeat to an excellent and downright brilliant candidate. To make matters worse she's my very own US Senator too.

And all this is what has got me thinking about formally endorsing John McCain. I will naturally do what little I can to get the Democratic candidate elected in the fall - but supporting and endorsing him? Nooo. God, the Democratic Party and Barack Obama (not necessarily in that order) forbid! Apparently my support is like a deadly poison to a political candidate. No matter how bright the outlook - I somehow possess the magical power to end any and all campaigns in utter defeat just by supporting it.

I would obviously rather have it the other way around you know, so that my support would be tantamount to victory. But, hey, we've got to play the hand we were dealt.

So hear ye, hear ye: I hereby proudly endorse John McCain for POTUS.

...And if that isn't enough to guarantee a landslide victory for Barack Obama in November - I don't know what will.

Poll
What is the proper action to take?
DemAC should go home and feel ashamed for not supporting Barack Obama and then refrain from ever supporting any candidate again
DemAC should endorse John McCain and we are indeed thankful that DemAC did not support Barack Obama
DemAC should endorse John McCain and Hillary Clinton should blame DemAC as the sole reason she will not be President in 2009
DemAC should endorse every Republican running this year, even though that would turn America into a one party country

I sure know how to pick'em, don't you think?

I'm more to the left than most Clintonistas are I believe, and I was not a particularly stalwart supporter of Bill in the 90's (thus he could actually win elections!) and my unfailing judgment told me it would be nice with a new approach in 2000 instead of "continuing" with Gore. Oh boy...

Hillary I've always admired though, so when she decided to run it was an easy decision to support her.

That's because Bradley was nominally the anti-establishment candidate, just as Obama was.  In reality, Bradley and HRC have a lot of similar positions (just as Obama and HRC do).  FWIW I know plenty of Bradley supporters who supported Edwards initially.

As someone that hasn't had all that great of luck myself (I originally backed Harkin in 1992 - though I was an enthusiastic Clinton supporter after Harkin petered out, I backed Bradley in 2000, and of course, Dean in 2004).

I have the same problem with lanes on the freeway (2.00 / 9)

I pick a lane and suddenly it just stops.  Not that my issue is as emotional as yours.

by nklein on Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 11:59:05 PM EST

Same. (2.00 / 11)

Changing lanes usually works out poorly for me. And when I'm in the store, I always manage to pick the wrong register. I can pick the shortest line and still have to stand there forever (usually because the cashier is being trained, has a broken register, or can't figure out the price of one or more items).

And of course, my candidates always seem to lose, too.

Re: Proudly endorsing John McCain for President (2.00 / 8)

It's scary, I must admit, and he hasn't won yet, to be sure, but there are literally millions of us this time actively invited to participate.  From the Obama side of the hill the experience has been exhilarating, to say the least.  I'm an expatriate and get daily emails from other Americans abroad who are engaged in the process.  I've never seen anything like it, a full order of magnitude higher on the Richter scale than the Dean campaign in 2004.

This may even be fun.  It's been a honk so far.  Plenty of room for more.

Re: Proudly endorsing John McCain for President (2.00 / 7)

Well, it hasn't been equally fun from this side of the hill though. It has already been repeated into a cliché of sorts - but they both truly are amazing candidates, and so for me it truly hurts and it is heartbreaking to have Hillary lose this.

Re: Proudly endorsing John McCain for President (2.00 / 6)

I can fully understand, and sympathise.  I'm actually having some difficulty coping with apparent success, myself, and wonder if there is still time for this to end badly.  But somehow I doubt it, it just feels completely different this time.

But if your signature line is any indication you may find some relief sooner or later.  I reckon Hillary has a lot to contribute and is going to be around for a long time to come.  In the meantime the kind of good-will and puckish humour evident in your diary does a lot to lighten the mood around here and suggests to me your discomfort may be more short-lived than otherwise.  Thanks for the diary, anyhow, it was timely and appropriate and expressed a feeling I think a lot of progressives have no trouble in sharing with you.

Hello, I'm Barack Obama (2.00 / 9)

And I don't want YOUR support!  Included with this letter is a McCain bumper sticker.  Thank you...for staying away!

Hey, we all know the hard kick of failure in elections.  This is a Democratic site.  And I've been a Cubs fan for 40 years.  That's not even half of the time it's been since they last won a national championship.  My grandpa never got to see it.  I'm really hoping my dad lasts that long.

But dammit they've got a deadly lineup, solid pitching and real chemistry.  They're currently the best team in baseball.  What could possibly go wrong?  Hell, any team can have a bad century.

Ok, the Cubs?  Not so much.  But Barack Obama?  Did you see him last night?  Did you see John McShame?   Do you remember who is right on every issue that matters to most people and who is wrong?  Do you remember whose party is pariah for being a bunch of war-starting, economy tanking assholes?

Let's just win one.  Your losing streak doesn't look very intimidating to a Cubs fan.  Losing faith after only one generation in your family has a lifelong losing streak?  Please.

Ask a Boston fan if streaks can be broken.

Let's just go and change the world already.  ;)

I'm wondering if I should do the same:

1984 - Primary - Hart; General - Mondale
1988 - Primary - Gore; General - Dukakis
1992 - Primary - Tsongas; General - Clinton
1996 - Primary (pass); General - Nader
2000 - Primary (pass); General - Gore
2004 - Primary - Dean; General - Kerry
2008 - Primary - Edwards

I'm almost afraid to support Obama in the general.

I must say you sound like a true fellow McSame endorser to me ;-)

Recc'd for sure... (2.00 / 8)

as well as the ability to answer the "Is this snark?" question before it is even asked.  Well, for most of us anyway, judging by a few comments.  Bravo!

Re: Proudly endorsing John McCain for President (2.00 / 6)

Although your record is impressive (?) in your ability to vote for the losing candidate, I still say go with Obama.  You can't be a jinx forever.  Even in Vegas the tables eventually turn.

Hmm...Of course that is how many gambling addicts have lost everything so maybe you shouldn't listen to me. :)

Shock and Awe!! (none / 0)

No one on this site is gonna want to hear this. But I was over at Hillary's site reading all her supporter's blogs.

A bunch of them moved over to McCain's website!!!

What's really funny is there are more Clinton supporters on McCain's website, then McCain Supporters!!!!

The blogs are all "welcome clinton supporters!!"..

unbelievable

Re: Proudly endorsing John McCain for President (2.00 / 2)

This is my first time, I missed the voting cutoff by half a year in 2004, so I'm thinking that seeing my favored candidate actually pull off an upset is going to spoil me on election years for the rest of my life. I can't imagine another one living up to this. Thanks, Obama!

John McCain hates terrorists, except the ones that hate women. Those are just swell.
by terra on Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 01:07:19 AM EST

Is this sn... oh, thank God, it's snark. (2.00 / 5)

I was trying to take a "This Troll Supports John McCain" button image and transform it into a "This Democrat Supports John McCain In An Ironic Fashion" button. However, it was too much work and I couldn't find the original image. Go inertia! Great diary.

by Exhausted Pennsylvanian on Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 01:28:27 AM EST

This should be cross-posted at DKos! (2.00 / 3)

Go for it! (If you don't have an account there, don't want to create an account there, or don't have time to post it there, I'll do it for you.)

It'll shoot right to the top of the Rec List!

Why didn't you do that in the primaries?

Re: Proudly endorsing John McCain for President (2.00 / 1)

Hi DemAC,

Everytime I go to a MET game in NY to chear for them, the METs lost.

Sometimes we all have bad streaks.

Maybe, by telling everyone you endorse McCain, you can jinx him and Obama will win. (smile)

There is not much difference in Obama and Hillary's policy, some hearts broken, but we all mend fast.

I hope you get onboard the Obama train and you break your streaak.

Good luck.

Why don't you post this on Red State? (1.00 / 3)

This is a Democratic web site and we support the Dem nominee who will be Barack Obama.

If you support the Republican than you should start going to right wing websites and stay there.

Democrats who want to unite will be staying here.

Re: Why don't you post this on Red State? (none / 0)

Read it again. He is basically saying that he is supporting McCain because his support is a jinx; his support of McCain will guarantee an Obama victory.

He's a good guy here.

my Diary about switchers to McCain was banned (none / 0)

my yesterday's Diary about
"Clinton supporters switching to McCain"
was banned and I was warned and somebody with administrative privileges called me a "linkwhore" right inside warning message.
This site will be overrun soon (or is it already?) by dkos types. I am not blogging on dkos for ages.
I have a similar history: Gore, Dean, now Hillary.
I guess I can follow you, but my reasoning is different.
Good luck to you with your magical power.

Well, this isn't the right forum to go against the Democratic candidate. Please follow your candidate's lead - the only reason all this nonsense came up is becaue they agreed on so much.

Welcome to being a Democrat! (2.00 / 1)

From an Obama supporter, I can say -- what the heck is this strange sensation?  The corners of my mouth are upturned and you can see my teeth.  It kind of hurts.  Is this what they call winning? I could get used to this.

I backed a winner in 2000 too, but somehow even then my guy didn't get into the White House.

We have the same issue with lawn signs... (2.00 / 3)

...and we've made a commitment to not put any candidate signs on our lawn this year.

Bravo! (2.00 / 2)

I, too, nearly blew a vessel when I saw the diary title. But I, too, have let my fingers move faster than my brain a couple times in the past so I don't usually post before I think anymore...

Usually, that is. :p

Maybe there is a McCain group to be formed out of this: "Failed Gamblers for McCain" or something like that...

Not a losing streak (2.00 / 2)

Just wanted to point something out to ya.  Your losing streak isn't as bad as you describe.

Al gore actually won in 2000.  So, really, you aren't doing too bad.

Re: Proudly endorsing John McCain for President (2.00 / 1)

Wow, and here I thought I was the only one. Here's my sparkling record:

1976 - Jerry Ford (G)
1980 - Ted Kennedy (P), Jimmy Carter (G)
1984 - Gary Hart (P), Walter Mondale (G)
1988 - Paul Simon (P), Mike Dukakis (G)
1992 - Paul Tsongas (P), Bill Clinton (G)
1996 - Ralph Nader (G)
2000 - Bill Bradley (P), Al Gore (G)
2004 - John Kerry (P)
, John Kerry (G)
2008 - Barack Obama (P)

=candidate won. But I'm only 3-for-12, so should I endorse McSame, too?

So basically you believe in karma? That's too funny.

by soyousay on Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 02:18:35 PM EST

My bad.... (2.00 / 1)

Not really Karma; you're superstitious. :D

I'm a realist. It has nothing to do with superstition or karma. When the system creates tear one and tear two candidates, caucasus, and superdelegates, plus 24/7 media coverage/propaganda that's extremely opinionated, the American people really don't have too much say. In the end, the decision came down to the supers.

No, You Aren't the Worst Luck (2.00 / 1)

I supporterd RFK (68), Humphrey (72), Brown (76), Carter (80)-Ok he won but he also lost the general, Hart (84), Hart then Simon (88), Kerrey (92), Clinton (96)- My only win, Bradley then Gore (00), Dean (04), then Clinton (08).

In terms of professional sports. In championship games and series the team located where I live (from what I know) is 0-12. They have lost 9 Superbowls, 1 World Series, 1 Soccer Bowl, and 1 Stanley Cup final. Moreover, three cities where I lived won championships (2 World Series and 1 WNBA championship) within one year after I moved out of the city.
